Using our technology
The world faces huge challenges, from petroleum dependency, the nutritional requirements of a growing population and the need for novel healthcare treatments, to a requirement for increased data storage capacity. The ability to harness biology will help address many of these challenges, but a step change in DNA synthesis and the ability to rapidly prototype new genes and pathways is required to unlock many of these opportunities. Our third-generation gene synthesis approach has the far-reaching potential to achieve these objectives.
Healthcare
From the generation of novel antibodies and vaccines, to the engineering of pathways to manufacture drugs biologically, to gene editing and gene therapy, there is huge amount of opportunity for synthetic biology to impact pharmaceuticals and drug discovery.
Industrial biotech
Our reliance on petroleum represents a clear threat to our planet, but many of the products of the petrochemicals industry can be made using biology. With appropriate gene synthesis technologies and the ability to rapidly evolve new gene activities, synthetic biology will offer the opportunity to produce a vast array of products from starch, cellulosic sugars and other sources of biomass.
Materials science
Biological processes offer an opportunity to generate environmentally safe, biodegradable and high-performance materials suitable for a range of industries, from clothing to medical devices and automotive parts.
Agriculture
As the world’s population moves towards 10 billion, there will be an unprecedented need for novel crop plants and fertilisers. By engineering plants to enhance the nutritional or health value of food or by improving nitrogen fixation in microbes, the possibilities are endless for the agricultural industry. A revolutionised approach to gene synthesis will allow for faster development in almost every way imaginable.
Digital data storage
The demand for data storage is growing exponentially, but current storage modalities do not have the potential to keep pace with need. By using DNA based technology, there is potential for long lasting, incredibly dense storage at reduced cost, opening up broad potential for the future of digital storage.
